Vintage Pens: Sheaffer Balance Set
Vintage Pens: 1985 Sheaffer Balance Set
Have you ever heard about the harvesting of abalone shells? The pros dive deep into the kelp beds off the California coast. With only a single breath of air in their lungs, they seek out the abalone, hoping to find one on a rock. If they grab it, it has incredible strong attachments that will not give out. However, if the diver simply flicks it sideways with their fingers before the attachments can brace it, it will fall right off the rock into their hands. Imagine the effort it would have taken to harvest enough abalone in the 1930s to create these special Sheaffer Balance pens and pencils. The rainbow translucence of the shells under lacquer is only slightly discolored on the fountain pen and nearly perfect on the still working pencil. We restored the pen with a new ink sac. There are no cracks. The pen has light surface wear and the pencil has a really deep quarter-inch scratch and a gap between the barrel and cap. The pen's original 14k gold nib writes a buttery smooth fine line.
