Vintage Pens: Conklin M31
Vintage Pens: 3125 Conklin M31
When Susie Thomas graduated high school in 1905, her parents gave her a Conklin M31 as a gift to help her earn her degree in business college and then hit the working world. Susie must have been quite the modern to plan on a career in business at the turn of the 20th century. We received this handsome pen from her granddaughter. It is very rare for us to know the complete origins of a pen, and this pen is very rare in that it is perfectly preserved with its long, tapered slip cap. No cracks. No significant marks or wear on the chased black hard rubber. The gold filled trim has more wear. The imprints are all legible, although the M31 is weakest where the cap posted. We restored the vintage pen with a new ink sac. We also replaced the very broken original nib with a size 2 14k gold Conklin (replacement) nib. It writes a fairly smooth, FLEXI line that goes from fine to 2mm. Chocolate hazing. Monogramed gold-filled ring. 16.9cm capped.
