Waterman

Waterman gave birth to the modern fountain pen in 1884 in New York City. Lewis Edson Waterman invented the first viable inkfeed for mass production that year, after a faulty pen ruined an insurance deal he was about to make. His 3-fissure inkfeed started a pen empire that still survives to this day. There was an A.A. Waterman pen company, too, but 99.9% of the vintage pens on this site are derived from the L.E. Waterman founding. The modern Waterman pen company is now owned by Sanford brands, which is in turn owned by Newell-Rubbermade.

Pre-Owned Pens: 6441 Waterman Rhapsody
Filling Mechanism: Ballpoint
Era: 1980-present
Price: $99.99
Pre-Owned Pens: 6441: Waterman: Rhapsody
Waterman was already well on its way back as a luxury pen maker when it created the Waterman Rhapsody. This blue-marble ballpoint was part of the upper tier of pens for the company. We replaced the refill with a brand-new blue one. It writes very well, as the brass-barrel construction of the pen gives it a little extra weight, which helps it write more smoothly. Twist the tail cap to advance or retract the ballpoint. You will find some light wear on the pen but nothing egregious. 14.1cm.

Filling Mechanism: Lever Filler
Era: 1940-1949   Fountain Pen Nib Size: XF
Price: $149.99
Vintage Pens: 6285: Waterman: #3
Bonjour, Waterman #3. We love it when we get French pens from the 1940s. This Waterman #3 is a post-World War II model that we don't think was officially released here in the U.S. We restored it with a new ink sac, and it is a very attractive example. No cracks nor deep scratches. Light wear at worst. You will write a firm, extra-fine line with its 18k gold nib. Click the headline for close-ups. 13.6cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 6270 Waterman Ink-Vue
Filling Mechanism: Lever Filler
Era: 1930-1939   Fountain Pen Nib Size: SF
Price: $2,499.99
Vintage Pens: 6270: Waterman: Ink-Vue
Suddenly playing catch-up to Parker with its transparent barrels, Waterman developed its own see-through barrel pen. The Waterman Ink-Vue was introduced in the mid-1930s. This is an insanely rare demonstrator model of that classic vintage pen! It has some ambering, but it is in really amazing condition. Crisp imprints. No cracks in the main cap or barrel. It appears the inner cap has some fractals. In truth, it is mostly a bulb filler, only it has a cover over the rubber bulb and a lever system pumps the bulb. This pen is so rare and delicate, we've left the petrified original bulb in it. Click the headline for close-ups. The name Val Steiniger is engraved on the tail of the barrel. We don't expect you to write with this museum piece, but its 14k gold nib has a little flex and feedback. 12.8cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 6210 Waterman C/F
Filling Mechanism: Cartridge/Converter
Era: 1950-1959   Fountain Pen Nib Size: M
Price: $39.99
Vintage Pens: 6210: Waterman: C/F
Many consider the Waterman C/F to be the first of the modern-era pens, although it is a classic vintage pen. Why? It was, effectively, the first pen to use disposable plastic ink cartridges. Although a success, it was short lived. The biggest problem for vintage collectors is that the Waterman C/F doesn't use any modern cartridges or converters. Waterman wasn't using standard international cartridges in the 1950s, as the concept was yet to be invented. If you find a 1950s cartridge, you can refill it with a syringe to use this pen. Unfortunately, it doesn't include an original cartridge. The pen looks great, except for that big crack in the tail visible in the photo. You will write a medium line with its 14k gold nib. There is a some feedback. 13.2cm capped.

Harkening back to 1920s black hard rubber with "chasing" designs, this Waterman LeMan Opera fountain pen is a stunningly handsome modern luxury pen. The cap and barrel are in nearly perfect condition. The gold-plated trim has just a little schmutz and wear on the tail end. Click the headline for close-ups. Its two-tone 18k gold nib writes a nice fine-medium line. It is a soft nib that responds to light pressure, but this is not a conventional semi-flex nib. The thin 18k gold is easily sprung. The pen includes a box and papers. 14.4cm capped.
