Our Origins

Owner Nathaniel Cerf has been a fountain pen junkie since the age of 9, when he first found his late grandfather's Sheaffer Lifetime Balance and began writing with it. Years later, while teaching a fencing class in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Cerf met a fountain pen repairman who began teaching him the art and science of vintage pen repair. Cerf soon mastered the intricacies of restoring lever-fillers, button-fillers, crescent-fillers, Vacumatics, TouchDowns and ... eventually ... Sheaffer Snorkels.

From Hobby to Business

With a growing collection of restored pens, Cerf started selling them at a local antique store, quickly realizing the demand for classic pens. After moving to the Chicagoland area, he recognized the limited online options for pen enthusiasts. In 2007 he expanded the venture to the internet with the help of Chris & Ruth Gagliano at Computer Friendly Associates. Since then ThePenMarket.com became one of the fastest-growing pen retailers in the country, continually adapting to meet the needs of its customers. These days ThePenMarket.com can also be found on Facebook, Instagram and at pen shows all around the United States.
